Mellow Yellow Monday – 17

Visit to Tortuga Rum Factory
Grand Cayman Island

One of our island excursions on Grand Cayman Island included a visit and taste tasting at the Tortuga Rum Factory ~~ famous for their Rum Cake and variety of flavors of rum.

Founded in 1984, Tortuga Rum Company has grown to become the largest duty-free liquor business in the Cayman Islands.  Husband and wife team Robert and Carlene Hamaty, started the company while they were both employed by the islands national airline, Cayman Airways.

Carlene started baking rum cakes at home, using a family recipe handed down through at least four generations.  Encouraged by rave reviews from friends, Carlene tested the local demand. The Tortuga Rum Cake made its first “public” appearance on the dessert menu of a local restaurant, and was an instant hit.  The Tortuga Rum Cake production officially began in 1987.  As the saying goes, “the rest is history”.

Free sample trays of freshly baked rum cake squares, as well as tastes of different flavored rums tempt visitors … while we observed Tortuga Rum Cakes being baked, and generously hand glazed with their 5 year old premium rum.  We were told this facility is able to produce between 5,000 and 6,000 Tortuga Rum Cakes each day … that is a LOT of rum cake.

Although a difficult task, I resisted purchasing rum cake or rum to bring home ~~ but I admit … I did taste several varieties of rum cake morsels and flavored rum.  YUM!!

Mellow Yellow Monday #169

I stumbled upon Mellow Yellow Monday, whose specialty is all things yellow. Intrigued, as yellow is my favorite color, I decided to interject some “sunshine” for the winter months.  With approaching spring, I still enjoy the weekly boost of yellow — so I will continue with Monday Sunshine.

Why not join in the sunshine fun?

Thanks for the tour! Falls into the ‘learn something new everyday’ vain. Once I get myself a tad more organized which maybe next to ‘never’ I’ll have to visit more prompt sites!

This particular Mellow Yellow post is very special to me, for the past two Christmases I have been very pleased to be able to purchase Tortuga Rum Cakes at my local Herbal Solutions and Natural Foods/Health Store, owned by very dear friends here. So wonderful to see where they are made! How did you possibly resist buying some?
