Crepe Myrtles
South Louisiana
Crepe Myrtles are popular trees in the South. They are among the welcoming signs of Spring and Summer. They line roadways, public gardens and lawns either in single form or en masse. Their confetti like petals treat us to full blooms in a profuse manner. Crepe myrtles adorn our yards with white, varying shades of pink, purple, lavender, and red flowers. If pruned correctly, their limbs and trunks become living sculptures. The abundance and weight of the blossoms often cause the limbs to bow gracefully and artfully.

They range from having a single trunk to having multiple trunks — as indicated in this photo! I love ’em!!

“Southern Lilac”, they’re sometimes called. I miss the midwestern lilacs terrifically. Crepe myrtles don’t have the fragrance, but they certainly dress up the landscape nicely.

I hadn’t thought them as “Southern Lilacs” … nice thought!!
Actually they do have a fragrance. I noticed it last week when I was watering ~~~ the only thing in bloom at the moment in our dry hot weather are the crepe myrtles. I have a full white one and two slender red ones.
