“Inside”

The Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota is redecorated each year with naturally colored corn and other grains and native grasses to make it “the agricultural show-place of the world”.  The designers currently use 13 different colors or shades of corn to decorate the Corn Palace: red, brown, black, blue, white, orange, calico, yellow and green corn!  A different theme is chosen each year, and murals are designed to reflect that theme. Ear by ear the corn is nailed to the Corn Palace to create a scene.  The decorating process usually starts in late May with the removal of the rye and dock. The corn murals are stripped at the end of August and the new ones are completed by the first of October.

Have been to the Corn Palace twice. Love this artistic use of corn and celebration of the bounty of harvest. Thanks for the beautiful reminder of earlier trips…will have to head west, again.

  5. Wow, this is amazing. Despite the limits of using natural corn they have created some wonderful images. I love the idea of a mosaic using natural foods…..really wonderful and thanks for sharing this tradition with us 🙂

That is awesome, Becca! I love seeing things close (or semi-close) to home. The Corn Palace is just a few hours away from me, but I don’t make it out there too often. We did stop by this year on our way from the Black Hills out to Minnesota. My favorite picture for this year is a Nativity scene. Thanks for sharing the great photos and information 🙂

The colors initially made me think of ancient Egyptian artifacts. I love that the murals are made of corn.

  16. We go by this every year on our way to Wyoming. The summer of 2012 I took my best friend there and she confessed she thought it would be, I’ll say hokey, not corny. But she loved it. Here’s my post from that time: http://sustainabilitea.wordpress.com/2012/09/26/its-corny-and-it-isnt/.

The Corn Palace was one of our stops along the way to the Dakotas – fall bus tour with my mom!! It was amazing to watch them put up the scenes. I haven’t checked to see the theme of this year — yet! 😀
