King Cake Knots ~~

Happy Mardi Gras, mes amis!

In most areas of the world, even in the United States, today is a Tuesday.  However, in my area of the world, today is Mardi Gras Day!

Coming to a close at midnight, the Carnival Season which began on the Twelfth Night (Epiphany) culminates today ~~ Mardi Gras Day!

Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday, referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which begins on Ash Wednesday (tomorrow).  It is also known as Shrove Tuesday.

Unlike the frequent media portrayal of bawdy celebrations,  we celebrate Mardi Gras in a family-friendly tradition.

Of the many tasty delights throughout the season, the King Cake is the favorite tradition.  Sadly, since I am not “home”, my taste buds have missed this delight.  Since today’s time is rapidly evaporating, and the craving is high, I will set out to make a quick version of King Cake to satisfy my envie (Cajun French for craving).

I discovered Steph’s Easy King Cake Knots on her delightful website called Plain Chicken.  I am dashing out the door to gather the necessary ingredients before I come to my senses! 😀

Easy King Cake Knots

1 loaf refrigerated french bread dough
3 Tbsp butter, softened
1/4 cup sugar
1 Tbsp cinnamon
1 cup powdered sugar
4 tsp milk (may need more to get right consistency)
1/2 tsp vanilla
colored sugar – yellow, purple, green

You know, I never stopped to translate Mardi Gras. Of course! But who would be silly enough to give up rich foods and King Cake for Lent?!

My son was born in Mobile, where we were with sub-contractors for the Corps of Engineers! Many a King Cake was gobbled by this one, I can tell you! YUMMMM! I always enjoyed Mardi Gras in Mobile, for it was not so overwhelming as N’awlins’ celebrations! Happy Fat Tuesday, dear Becca!
