Small Stone – Day 17

Small Stone

Small Stone

Robin blue skies
Puffy like cottony clouds
Sunny winter day
Crazy though – two days ago
25 degrees – today 60 degrees
Warm enough to remove Chloe’s sweater
And brush Utah’s natural winter coat

Sheer pleasure on Utah’s face
I stroke and brush his undercoat
He plops down
Displays his belly for more
Eyes roll backward
Smiles from ear to ear
An almost audible sigh of “Ahhhhh”

Ohhhh
To live in the mindful moments of my dogs
Fur lined deck
Purposefully leaving for the birds
Material for their nests
Lone ladybug suns near

What are small stones?

A small stone is a short piece of writing (any style) that precisely captures a fully-engaged moment for you. The process of discovering small stones is as significant as the finished creation. Searching for small stones encourages you to keep your senses on the “alive and alert” status. Involve yourself with a new set of eyes, ears, nose, mouth, fingers, feelings and mind. In short … OPEN, OPEN, OPEN!

  1. I can just see and feel your pet’s fur, Becca! “Ohhhh To live in the mindful moments of my dogs” I so understand this feeling. I watch my dog take pure pleasure in running for no particular reason. Her tongue lolls out, her fur streams in the wind, and she looks ridiculously happy. And the excitement she gets just from knowing she is about to take a walk… I remember feeling like that when I was a kid and could take my time in nature. It was quiet then, and no one worried that I would wander off alone to explore, no one intruded on my thoughts or senses–it was just the forest and me and my brother saying, “Go ahead…I know you need to do your Thoreau thing.”

This is a great ‘snapshot’ of your life, Becca! You convey so much in so few words, I can easily picture what you are describing. 🙂

I would love to sit outdoors but alas we are having a cold snap and doesn’t get above 40 most days and dips down quite cold at night. Scraping ice in the morning. Leavings for bird nests. I love this Becca and how you found this bit of unfolding insight upon brushing your pet. Awesome!
