“Wedding Cake House”
Kennebunk, Maine, USA

This was taken while on one of the Tour Bus Trips to the North East USA with my mom.

A plaque placed at the side door of the George W. Bourne House in Kennebunk, Maine by the Maine Society, Daughters of American Colonists, tells us that:

“In 1825 the shipbuilder George Washington Bourne (1801-1856)
brought his bride, Jane, to this new brick Federal-style home.
Inspired by Milan’s Gothic Cathedral, Bourne started the house
decorations in 1852, using only hand tools.  He completed the
work shortly before his death.  By century’s close, the name
“Wedding Cake House” was widely applied.  The house was
completely refurbished in 1983-1984 by Mary and Anne Burnett,
first owners not of the family.”

It is considered the most photographed house in the state of Maine. The name  “Wedding Cake House” is derived from its wedding cake-like exterior appearance.  I did not capture photos of the extensions of the house, which include a shed and carriage house/barn.  The entire property is “married together” in the same style and color.  Quite a sight to behold!

Mellow Yellow Monday #165

I stumbled upon Mellow Yellow Monday, whose specialty is all things yellow. Intrigued, as yellow is my favorite color, I decided to interject some “sunshine” for the winter months.  With approaching spring, I still enjoy the weekly boost of yellow — so I will continue with Monday Sunshine.

Why not join in the sunshine fun?

What a way for Mr. Bourne, the shipbuilder, to spend his time with handtools! Imagine! Bless you for sharing this incredible experience you had with your mom here! It looks good enough to eat and then lick your fingers!

It must have been quite an effort for one man and no power tools.
